Bonehead is the story I never thought I’d have to tell. Earlier this year, a neck injury in Hawaii pulled me out of the water for six months and forced me to face the possibility that surfing, and life as I knew it, might never look the same. A ruptured disc pressing into my spinal cord, surgery, rehab, and setbacks. It was heavy.
But when I finally got the green light, I packed a boardbag and flew straight to Indo. Grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it.
Pilgrimage - a surf film by Ruby Berry, is both a young surfer’s seasonal journey to chase waves, but also the beginning of something much bigger. From a young age, the annual migration to warmer weather and offshore barrels, draws many a core WA surfer up north to the desert. “ A journey to the holy land “ if you will. A place of raw beauty, but certainly not for the faint hearted. For a young girl to earn her stripes in this line up, in these waves of consequence. is no easy task. It takes a certain type of passion and a learned experience, full of bumps, cuts and bruises. The underlying theme of any surf trip is optimism. There are empty perfect waves out there, just a matter of getting to ‘em at the right time. This most recent Maps to Nowhere adventure — featuring Ian Crane, Noah Wegrich, Soli Bailey and Laura Crane exploring a rugged, cold and unpredictable stretch of coast — embodied that spirit. How rugged? “It’s in our DNA: don’t go to the water,” local guide explained. “That’s where you go to work or go to die. It’s raw and brutal up here — and not friendly for ocean activities.” Thing is, this crew was here looking for exactly that. And after a few skunks, hours and hours in the car, rain, wind and swells that wouldn’t play nice, they found empty, reasonably perfect waves. Not 10-foot slabs, but the kind of fun that most surfers hop on a plane for. As British surfer Laura Crane said a couple days into the trip, “You can only be as stoked as what’s in front of you.” Which, in this case, turned out to be more than enough. VIEW ALL EPISODES
